The BYPY 2019 Committee

Kirn Dibra – Risk and Control Manager, Experian (Chair)

Why did you join the BYPY committee?

To have fun! Being part of a great group of people who have a lot of fun coming up with new ideas to put on an evening to celebrate the amazing talent we have in Birmingham. I have been part of this committee for two years and have met some fab people and made some amazing friends along the way.

What’s your favourite thing about Birmingham?

EVERYTHING! I love that Birmingham has everything that you will ever think of or need – brilliant sporting facilities, great universities, amazing shopping, the best bars and restaurants…. And most importantly for me, Birmingham is home, where my family and friends are.

Did you know…?

Outside of work, I love playing tennis and squash, and I am a member of the Edgbaston Priory Club… although my skills on court could be described as ‘in need of a lot of work’!

Lucy Gray – Trainee Solicitor, Shoosmiths LLP

Why did you join the BYPY committee?

I’m new to Birmingham, but not so new that I didn’t get to attend BYPY 2018, which was such a fantastic celebration of young people, professional services and the West Midlands that I knew I wanted to be involved for 2019.

What’s your favourite thing about Birmingham?

Being part of a city that is going through such an exciting period of growth and investment; from HS2 to HSBC, and Digbeth to Paradise, this is a city buzzing with opportunity.

Did you know…?

As a native Geordie, I once had a cameo appearance in Byker Grove. Sadly the acting career didn’t take off so I had to turn to law instead… why aye pet!

Why did you join the BYPY committee?

To be a part of one of the most iconic events in Birmingham, which is not only recognised in the Midlands but throughout the country. I know people who travel from London for the event! It’s also an opportunity to network with a set of individuals from various backgrounds who I wouldn’t usually get to meet.

All the bars and restaurants! The city centre is very up and coming.

I joined the BYPY committee as I love planning events in my day job, such as the Colmore Food Festival or lunchtime well-being sessions, and wanted to get involved in other events that are different to those that I do in my day job. What better event than Birmingham’s most prestigious business awards!

Gishan Abeyratne – Senior Associate, BCL Legal

Why did you join the BYPY committee?

Last year I won the award in the HR, Recruitment & Training category; and from start to finish including the judging day, meeting my fellow contestants, the awards evening itself, I really enjoyed the entire experience! Being a part of the committee this year means I can help this year’s finalists in their preparation for judging day, and I can help create an even more unforgettable experience for the next wave of future talent in Birmingham.

What’s your favourite thing about Birmingham?

Far too many to name just one! If I had to pick… the food and drink scene in Birmingham has gone through a massive evolution in the last few years and there is just so much choice and a plethora of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, bakeries, street food pop-ups etc. to experience! As such, I have come to accept being built for comfort and not speed.
